Abortion

July 12, 2006

Abortion has been disputed in America for over thirty years after the decision in Roe vs. Wade. The decision set forth the premise that abortions were legal because the fetus was not a human life and therefore not murder. This decision would give women the right to choose. Although the court case was over thirty years ago, there is still a lot of controversy over this subject.

The argument of abortion supporters believe that it is a woman’s right to choose if she should have an abortion or not and that the government should not interfere with her choice. Those who oppose abortion believe that a human fetus is equivalent to a human life and therefore abortion is the same as murder.

I believe that this topic does not have a right or wrong answer because it is a matter of opinion. That being said I believe that a woman has the right to choose weather or not she wants to have an abortion or not. The government, who was founded on the principles of basic freedoms for every citizen, should not be able to stop a woman who, in my belief, is not committing a crime. This government was also based on rights to personal property.

Abortion is only affecting the woman and the fetus, which is the property of the woman, so it should not be considered a crime. Our government should be protecting our basic rights as humans; it should not be taking them away. Our bill of rights has given us, as the founding fathers called it, natural rights, but our government is slowly trying to take away these natural rights that our constitution assures us.

Abortion is not only politically correct, but morally as well. Would you force a rape victim to leave the country to have an abortion? Or if the woman could not afford to travel to another country would you require her to have the child? No moral person could answer yes to either of these questions without a gun pointed to their head. Also, without abortion many unplanned pregnancies would occur. These pregnancies would produce many unwanted and unloved children across the globe.

Many countries are suffering from a population crisis and more unwanted children would worsen the problem. The world is getting more and more crowded and there are less and less resources. Without abortion many unwanted children would be brought up in financially unstable homes, go into overcrowded orphanages, or even be abandoned. These children are likely to become criminals and degrade the life of the average person.

Many pro-life supporters argue that these children are not necessarily unwanted and that they could grow up in a loving home. These pro-life supporters are correct, some of these unplanned pregnancies may produce children that grow up in loving homes, but let’s look at the facts.

Almost 80% of the abortions that occur in the United States are by unmarried women, and 52% of all abortions, in the U.S., are performed on woman between the ages 15 and 24.

I do not doubt that all of these women could be great mothers, but the children would grow up in unstable homes and be raised by very young single women. This does not sound like the best place for a child to be raised in.

Abortion is a touchy subject for many religious groups because it goes against their personal beliefs. They feel that having an abortion is equivalent to murdering a newborn baby. I respect their beliefs because it is their right to do so, but I just do not want them to impose their beliefs onto me and affect my life.
