Regents Road Bridge

July 12, 2006

Why does the city need to connect Regents Road? Environmentalists and some residents oppose the project, arguing it would degrade Rose Canyon, one of the city's few open space parks. The effects of building the bridge affect many people; Rose Canyon Open Space Park is a home to many animals and plants, even humans. Many species of plants and animals call Rose Canyon home. Where will the people walk their dogs, go for a nice run, have scout projects or even bird watch. It will ruin humans’ everyday enjoyments. The noise and traffic will bring chaos in the canyon. The noise will chase animals away from their natural habitats and disrupt the surrounding people who live in the nearby houses. Regents Road Bridge will continue straight though Rose Canyon to the other end next to Doyle Elementary School. Thousands of children and families either go to the school or enjoy the park will possibly cross Regents Road and with adding the bridge 25,000 vehicles traveling on it a day going 55 mph will make the walking less safe. Another effect that is affected is when the Draft EIR (Environmental Impact Report) builds the bridge. They will be using national emissions standards instead of California standards, so many humans are concerned about the air quality. It’s not worth it. Building the 870-foot Regents Road Bridge with two separate, two-lane bridges at a cost of $28.7 million, is just unbelievable. I’m not the only one in the U.C community who is upset, but many others are. My neighbors and family are also upset. I live very close to Regents Road; in fact my street is mentioned in the picture above. So if you had to ask me if I wanted the Regents Road Bridge to be built, I would say NO. I’m against it.
