The HimalayasAugust 05, 2007
The Himalayas are huge land mass located in the Indies. The mountain range stretches over 2500km from west to east. It has a width of 100-400km depending on where you are. The Himalayan mountain range is massive and very important to the many nearby ecosystems. If people continue damaging them, the mountains and the surrounding life they could be gone forever.
According to many geologists, the Himalayas are still geologically active; this means that the mountain range itself is still very unstable. Due to this, they constantly move towards the Eurasian Landmass, this cause the mountains to rise in high a couple millimeters every day. This means that the range is very fragile and can easily be disrupted or disturbed. For a long time the range was at balance, but not until recently for industrial purposes man has damaged much of the mountains and the life surrounding it.
To increase industrial work and human exploration of the mountains people built a large unit of roadways mainly to make the remote areas more accessible than they were before. This makes it possible for more people to visit the mountains, which damages the natural areas. This also makes it possible for there to be forest-based industries in those areas, these are the main causes for the environmental damages.
Native and rare plants such as the flora and the fauna are now being threatened by over population and industrialization. Environmentalists are worried because in other places where people take over the natural habitat the plants and animals in those areas sometimes go extinct. The flora and the fauna have predators that they have naturally been able to defend against. The will not be able to handle the over population and soon they will go on the verge of extinction.
In the Himalayas, there are a series of forests that man has always depended on. Before the population burst the forests were able to replenish the lost resources, and there was a maintained balance. With the population increase, the number of forest and wood dependent factories increased too. Forests were clear-cut for the need of the industries, now trees that were common fifty years ago in those, regions are now almost or are completely extinct. This is all due to the population growth and human demands on nature.
This is what has been done to a great natural habitat; people and our greediness and nothing else have only caused it. To fix the situation all industries that are in the Himalayas need to leave and the people also need to disappear. There is no reason why we need to use this natural resource for only a couple of factories. The sooner there are not more people disrupting the Himalayan ecosystems the quicker it will go back to its original norm. We should all stand up in the fight against the destruction of such a great habitat that is a beautiful part of this world.
