Animal Testing

July 19, 2007

Animal testing is often used to obtain results in the medical field or to test the effects products may have on the public. Is it truly ethical and possible to yield accurate results from it. I believe not due to the genetic differences between humans and animals and also ethical questions arise.

The pharmaceutical and medical fields have used animal testing to help in the advancement of there fields. They often use the testing to yield medical breakthroughs or to test the possible effects certain medications may have on patients. There is one problem that arises to this reason though, the genetic makeup between humans and animals although similar is not exact and there is no telling how these changes may effect certain side effects and reactions. The makeup of humans may cause them to have different reactions toward the medication. As well the size of the dose will have to be different because of human to animal size ratio, and we may not be able to accurately predict the size to dose difference. So due to this difference I believe that animal testing is invalidated to an extent.

Not only is there a genetic difference ethical questions arise when animal testing is mentioned. Is it really ethical and right to test on animals? To answer that question no, the human race has no right to place these animals under the harsh living conditions they face and to be treated the way they are. The doctors that test on these animals do it with ruthless carelessness. They view the animals as a product that can be replaced if it is killed or hurt, not as a living breathing creature. Yes they may not be humans but they have as much claim to this earth as we do. They deserve to be treated in a manner that is viewed as ethical to the human race. We as a society refer to serial killers and mass murderers as animals but we don’t test on them. How is it right what we view as unethical towards the scum of our race not as such when done to an animal that has done nothing to wrong society. These killers have wronged society, they are a detriment towards our survival but these animals who have done nothing except exist are the ones being tested on.

Animal testing is one of the key problems in our society today, it is a wrong to one of the few beautiful things that are left on this earth. We need to stop animal testing due to its unethical values and invalid results.
