Why the Hate on Stem Cells?

July 21, 2006

Why does it seem that so many people crusade against stem cell research due to ethical reasons? I honestly think that stem cell research will be worth it in the long run, despite the moral consequences constantly brung up about it. Several people have debated about the ethics of experimenting with stem cells, but have they ever viewed the uses of it? Stem cell research could lead to a permanent cure to Parkinson’s disease, paralysis, or even be used to replace missing/damaged organs or tissue. Although I do realize the ethical conflict of why these people are protesting against stem cell research, I don’t think they see the true potential benefits of stem cell research.

Why do I believe stem cell research is okay? For one, I don’t think the argument “it’s murdering the fetus” would apply, because it’s not really developed yet, so it really doesn’t have a mind of it’s own yet, and it’s more of the choice of the parents to do so with donating the fetus. The world is getting overpopulated already as well, I would think this would help to balance the population, and make older generations live longer if they wanted to. This might seem unethical, but remember that the world’s getting overcrowded with people; this is shown with increase of demand over supply in many heavily populated areas in the world, and some in not-so-heavily populated areas as well.

Despite President Bush’s plan to ban stem cell research due to ethical reasons, I don’t think that just because of that reason, he should ban stem cell research altogether. Again, in my opinion, it’s not really murdering the fetus if it’s not exactly sentient yet, even if people consider it a living being, the fetus is still in the mother’s womb in development, so the parent’s consent to go along with it is good enough. I think that more people would benefit greatly from stem cell research than these anti stem cell research crusaders are expecting. Would these naysayers realize the potentials of stem cell research if it ever gets out, or will they continue to protest against it?
