Animal Testing

July 12, 2006

Animal testing has been a controversial issue for many years. Some people are for animal testing to help find cures for certain illnesses, and to test the effects of new products before the product is used by humans. On the other hand, some people believe that animal testing is unethical, cruel, and inhumane towards the animals used for testing. I am one who believes that animal testing is immoral, although it can be beneficial to us.

I am against animal testing. The animals in the labs live under horrid conditions and are not getting a lot of proper care. In some cases, the animals are even abused. For example, making monkeys “dance” and yelling at them for blood pressure tests. I believe that testing non-medical substances on animals are unnecessary. The majority of people

believe that “it is immoral to cause harm or death to animals for the sake of human vanity” (Wikipedia). It has also been claimed that many tests have misleading results. In testing for drugs, sometimes there is a side-effect for humans not found with the animal used for testing. Those products end up harming humans as well as the animal. That is proof that sometimes animal testing can be a waste of experimentation and money.

There is a solution proposed by animal-rights and animal-welfare advocates, scientists, doctors, and the government is called the “three R’s”. The first R stands for “reduce”. The reduction of the number of animals used might help the issue of animal testing. That way, not as many animals will be affected by testing of products. The second R stands for “refine”. The animals will have more refined living conditions. The last R is for “replace”. Scientists are trying to find ways to replace living animals with methods such as using tissue cultures and computer simulations. Although the three R’s will help the controversial issue of animal testing, it will not completely rid the world of animal testing.

There are different pros and cons on the issue of animal testing. Although animal testing can help us, I think that testing products is doing more harm to the animals then not testing the products would do to humans. In my opinion, testing human products on animals is immoral and inhumane.
